Wejuli Mike: How to prevent Breast Cancer in Women

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Uganda, and it is estimated that approximately 2,500 women die from the disease each year.

This is a type of cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it is far more common in women. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma, which starts in the milk ducts. However, the majority of breast cancer cases occur in women who have no known risk factors.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in the size or shape of the breast, nipple discharge, or a change in the appearance of the nipple. However, many breast cancers do not cause any symptoms and are found on routine mammograms. Breast cancer is usually treated with surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. The specific treatment plan depends on the stage of the cancer, the size and location of the tumor, the patient’s age and health, and other factors. 

Breast cancer can be a very difficult diagnosis to receive, but there are many resources available to help patients and their families through the treatment process. There is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, but there are some things that may help reduce your risk. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight 
  • Exercising regularly
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Avoiding exposure to radiation and certain chemicals 
  • Girls who are still going through puberty may be able to reduce their risk by taking certain medications, such as tamoxifen.

In conclusion, some tips for breast cancer prevention and education include regularly checking your breasts for changes, knowing your family history of breast cancer, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption.
Additionally, it is important to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of breast cancer so that you can seek medical help if necessary.
