KAMPALA, UGANDA: A fatal accident in Makerere-Kavule has claimed the life of Jalia Nakiboneka, a student at the Law Development Centre (LDC) who she was knocked dead by a trailer while travelling on a bodaboda on Thursday afternoon.
“It is a dark day at LDC! We regret to announce the death of our student, Nakiboneka Jalia of Lira Campus, which occurred today in Makerere Kavule. She was crushed by a trailer truck while travelling on a boda-boda. Jalia was doing her Clerkship (Internship). MHSRIP!!!” LDC tweeted on Thursday afternoon.
Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson, Ms Faridah Nampiima confirmed the report and said the accident occurred at around 1:50 pm along Makerere-Kavule Road, in Kawempe Division, Kampala.
“The traffic police at Wandegeya has today 3rd.11.2022 at about 1350/c registered a fatal accident at Makerere Kavule. The accident involved a motor vehicle registration number UAY 005Q/UAD894Q Mercedes Benz) and a motorcycle, that claimed the life of a passenger on the motorcycle,” Ms Nampiima said in a police statement.
“The rider of the motorcycle took off immediately after the accident, but inquiries into the cause are underway,” the police statement added.
By press time, the body of the deceased had been conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem as inquiries into the incident continue.
Nakiboneka becomes the second student to die under similar circumstances after State Minister for Lands Sam Mayanja’s daughter, Belinda Birungi, 23, was also knocked dead while on a bodaboda and died instantly on Ntinda Road in Nakawa Division, in a space of a week.
The accident comes just a day after Police announced plans to conduct countrywide operations against bodaboda cyclists, having discovered that they make a big contribution to the accidents in Kampala and other parts of the country.
