KAMPALA, UGANDA: Eleven people have been arrested and a toy pistol recovered in a police operation against city criminal gangs.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango said the arrests were made after police carried out an impromptu operation in Namungoona II zone in Rubaga division, Kampala on Tuesday morning.
“The operation was conducted today (Tuesday) at Namungona II zone after receiving information from a reliable source that someone was seen with a gun in a bar,” Mr Onyango said in a police statement.
He explained that after receiving a tip-off, a team of Police Officers went up to the bar identified as EWA NICO NOTE BAR MAGOMBE where one black plastic toy gun, mairungi and a bag of fresh opium were recovered.
He identified the eleven suspects as; Kalule Jordan, Ntwatwa Muzafaru, Namiraku Patrick, Kalemera John, Kibaatu constant, Nicolas Kavuma, Sentongo Fredrick, Mukasa Paul, Mugume Emmanuel, Sengonzi Isaac, and Namagga Azida.
Onyango said the group has since been charged with unlawful possession of a toy gun, knife and opium and are currently detained at Old Kampala Police division.
The Operation follows a similar one carried out by the Jinja Road Police in areas of Kinawataka and Mbuya in which over 50 suspects were arrested, screened and others were taken to court.
The operations come in the wake of growing complaints of spiralling criminality targeting several of Kampala Suburbs.
