ADJUMANI, UGANDA: The police in Adjumani district are investigating a case of aggravated theft after suspected thugs broke in the office of Adjumani town council SACCO and stole security equipment worth Shs5m after intoxicating the night guards with drugs.
The Adjumani DPC SP Benon Byamukama confirmed the report Tuesday morning saying the incident happened at around 3:30 am, November 7, 2022, on Monday.
‘’When we were notified we responded quickly and found the two guards of the SACCO, two others who were guarding Adjumani town council office and one of their colleque working with National Water and Sewerage Cooperation were all lying unconscious’’. DPC Byamukama said.
According to police, the criminals reportedly used gas to gain access into the SACCO office and went away with security equipment’s that include, CCTV camera, CCTV saver, and router for internet all valued at Shs5m.
They however did not steal any money from the institution after failing to open the safe which was well secured.
One of the guards who had partially recovered told the police that all of them were offered chicken muchomo and passion fruit juice by a friend but all of them blacked out after finishing the food and could not remember what took place thereafter.
The guards were rushed to Adjumani hospital and medics who attended to them said they were steadily recovering without divulging the cause of the blackout.
The Sacco Board chairman Mr. Mangapi Lawrence who convened a press briefing later in the day appealed to the SACCO members to remain calm since the suspected thieves did not even steal shs 50 from the cash save.
Mr. Mangapi said the attempt by the suspected thieves will serve as an eye opener to the management of the SACCO and promised to sanction strict security hardening.
In 2016, thugs using similar strategy, invaded Equity bank and gained access into the strong room but failed to dismantle the cash save and as they retreated they shot dead the guard who was intoxicated with drugs.
