The ten regained their freedom on Tuesday evening following their arrest earlier in the day for alleged possession of the gun that was stolen from Busika police station.

Ashraf Bukenya Matumbwe, the LC I chairperson of Kalege village, says that security operatives drove the suspects to their homes at around 7 pm Tuesday. He says that the suspects were in good health, which excited their family.

The suspects revealed that they were driven and detained in Kololo, Kampala city following their arrest around 2 am Tuesday.

Sulaiman Nadduli said that they were happy to return home because they didn’t commit any crime.

He revealed that during interrogations, investigators asked them the whereabouts of the gun that was stolen from Busika police station but they had no clue about it.

“The security personnel released us without charge after we told them we didn’t know about the missing gun,” Imam Nadduli said.

He, however, says that they were roughed up during their arrest and are now on painkillers to relieve the pain.

Alhajji Nadduli told URN that Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, the deputy chief of CMI told him that they were misled by one of his relatives that the suspects had a gun which they never found.

According to Nadduli, upon interrogating the source, the security officers found that he may have a mental illness, which prompted Rugumayo to order the immediate release of the suspects. Defense ministry spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye also confirmed the release of the suspects.

The raid came a week after unknown assailants raided Busiika police station, killed two police officers, and injured two others before they made off with two firearms. Another police constable, Stephen Odama also died in the hospital on Tuesday morning.

About two weeks ago, Nadduli lost his son Jakana Sulaiman Nadduli, 37, following his arrest over allegations of promoting sectarianism. He was laid to rest at his ancestral home at Kaddunda village in Kapeeka sub-county, Nakaseke district.
