LIRA, UGANDA: A nurse in Lira has been arrested by the joint security team in Lira city for being in possession of 30 different assortments of drugs in her residence suspected to have been stolen from Amach Health Centre IV.
Ms Okolong Eunice was arrested on Tuesday, 8th November 2022 by the office of the DISO and RDC Lira in conjunction with the office of the RCC Lira city.
‘’In another intelligence-led operation, we have recovered this government store from the house of the lady. She is a nurse in one of the facilities in Lira District. In August this year, we also recovered stolen drugs from another facility in Lira District,” said Lawrence Egole, the Lira Resident City Commissioner in a twitter post.
Meanwhile the deputy RCC, Mr Enoch Wandera Wakwalu confirmed to the media that at least a high-level investigation has been launched into the matter and very soon those implicated together with Nurse Okolong shall be produced before court of law.
The assortment contains antimalarial drugs, antibiotics, coartem, Panadol, and syringes among many others were recovered from Okolong’s residents.
When contacted for a comment, a senior health officer in Lira district who preferred anonymity to his name said Okolong went for a study leave 12 years ago and has resumed working for less than a month and he assumes that she could have stolen the medicine from elsewhere but not Amach Health centre IV.
On Wednesday the 9th November 2022, the Lira district internal security officer {DISO} told the district officials from Apostolic Social Centre during a budget conference that there is rampant drug theft In Lira district, for example, the one of Amach health centre IV.
DISO in his speech said he is sure most of the leaders in Lira district are aware that one of the nurses in Amach is under investigation over drug theft-a very bad practice cropping up in the district.
The Lira Resident District Commissioner Mr Pintu Ismail told our reporter that, it is a general concern that Amach Health centre IV nurse Okolong Eunice shall be prosecuted to serve as a warning to other people who steal from government facilities.
‘’Please keep our drugs safe. For anyone who will be caught stealing drugs from Government Facility we shall deal him or her there and then legally,” said RDC Pintu.
