WAKISO: Boy,12, diver drown in stream

The first incident happened on November 23, when Ssentezza Joel, 12, had gone swimming with other children and unfortunately, drowned in the stream.

WAKISO, UGANDA: Police at Kira Division is investigating how a 12-year-old boy and a diver drowned in a stream in two separate incidents in Kijabijjo, Kira Municipality in Wakiso district.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the first incident happened on Wednesday, November 23, when Ssentezza Joel, 12, had gone swimming with other children and unfortunately, drowned in the stream.

“The children that survived rushed and informed their parents who mobilized efforts to find the body of the deceased but they could not find it on the first day. On Thursday, as the search intensified, Charles Kasaga Kiwanuka, 40, who had entered the same stream to help find the drowned child also drowned in the process,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that a search was mounted by volunteers to find the bodies of the deceased persons and the first victim was found.

“Police divers were called to help search for the body of the second victim yesterday but in vain. The search for the body is still ongoing,” Owoyesigyire observed.

Residents speak out

Peter Musoke, a resident of Kijabijjo, said they received the news of the drowning with shock which raises concern about the safety of children during this long holiday season which runs until early February 2023. 

“Parents need to keep an eye on the kids during this holiday, The entire village is in shock,” Musoke remarked. 

Owoyesigyire advised parents to be vigilant as their children are now back from school, playing and swimming in unsafe and unsupervised places should be prohibited and children warned against it.
