ADJUMANI, UGANDA: Adjumani Hospital’s long-serving Pharmacist, Mr. Mawadri Charles Onigo has been charged with theft of drugs, and subsequently granted bail by the anti-corruption court in Kololo, Kampala.
Mr. Mawadri who was on Thursday, November 24 represented by a Kampala-based law firm Matovu N.J and Company Advocates denied the charges and the court granted him bail pending the disposal of the matter.
In his statement Mr Mawadri pronounced his innocence, he said he was meant to deliver the coerterm at the hospital but got messed up with a series of assignments in the hospital and forgot to deliver the drugs at the hospital store.
He told police his arrest was planned by mafias who wanted him out of office. because he has served the government with diligence and a high level of morality.
The state house anti-corruption unit has since then taken over the investigations into the case of alleged theft of drugs leading to his recent re-arrest.
The 3 boxes of coerterm, anti-malaria drugs were also handed over to the office of the DHO before the suspect was driven to Kampala to avoid expiry since the trial of the accused person might drag on for a long time.
Background
The embattled pharmacist was early this week arrested on November 23, 2022, by the state house anti-corruption unit officials and driven to Kampala following an inquiry into the alleged theft of coerterm drugs valued at shs 12.5m.
His first arrest was on July 15, 2022, after a tip-off from concerned citizens that he was moving with government drugs in his car at night. However, he was released later released on July 20, 2022, on a court order issued by Adjumani magistrate grade one court, after an application for his unconditional release was filed by his counsel Aciga Richard of Matovu N.J and Company Advocates.
The pharmacist has subsequently been interdicted by Adjumani CAO Mr Oryono Grandfield pending the determination of his case by the anti-corruption court.
