“It is true, chairman Olemukan is dead. He died this evening after several attempts to save his life,” said Mr Okwii when contacted to confirm the saddening news that befell the people of Bukedea.
Mr Okwii noted that Olemukan was pronounced dead at Mulago Cancer Institute at around 5pm Saturday after losing battle to Cancer disease that weakened him for months until his last breath.
The deceased was was last month taken to The Nairobi Hospital in Kenya for treatment, but returned to Bukedea in December showing signs of improvement.
Last week on Wednesday, Mr Olemukan held thanksgiving prayers in Bukedea last Wednesday that was attended by his colleagues, including the district chairpersons of Teso sub-region.
However, Okwii explains that Mr Olemukan’s situation worsened on Friday he was rushed to Mulago as they prepared to have him return him to Nairobi for a review but unfortunately, he died hours later on Saturday evening.
The Speaker of Parliament who doubles as the Bukedea District Woman MP Rt. Hon Betty Anita Among eulogized Mr Olemukan’s death in a Saturday evening tweet via her official account.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the untimely death of my District Chairman and brother Moses Olemukan,” a tweet by Speaker Among reads in part.
“My sincere condolences to his family and the people of Bukedea, may his soul find eternal rest,” she added.
Mr Olemukan rose to headlines in 2020 after graduating with First Class Degree in Public Administration at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono.
At the time of his death, he was in his second term as LC5 Chairperson of Bukedea, a position he has held since 2016, having previously served as the LC3 chairperson of the same district.
During last year’s election, Mr Olemukan contested as Independent and retained his seat after losing in the NRM primaries.
However, in February this year, the district chairperson was arrested and remanded to Soroti government prison on alleged charges of murder during last year’s Christmas. His arrest caused an uproar in Bukedea.
Speaking to the media shortly after release from jail, Mr Olemukan said he was politically being fought, maintaining his innoncence.
“I have never killed any human being except slaughtering chicken in our home,” he said then. “What I know is that I am being fought politically by those who are not happy with the decision of the Bukedea people.”
By press time, family members were yet to release any plans for the burial and final send-off of the fallen district chairperson.
Although, a close relative and brother hinted that family plans to freeze his body for a week as burial arrangements get underway.
