JINJA, UGANDA: Police in Kakira, Jinja have today arrested two suspects on allegations of stealing five goats from Lwitamakoli village, Buyengo sub-county in Jinja district.
The goats were yesterday (Wednesday) stolen from the owner identified as Patrick Were, 27, a resident of Lwitamakoli village, Buyengo sub-county in Jinja district.
The suspects who are detained at Kakira central police station were identified as Justine Odama aka Obedi, 35, and Patrick Pariyo, 28, both residents of Nile village, Kakira town council in Jinja district.
Kiira regional police spokesperson ASP James Mubi confirmed the arrest and said that the duo took the goats and hid them in a sugarcane plantation waiting for buyers before police were tipped for their arrest.
“The duo stole the goats and hid them in a sugarcane plantation waiting for buying and we were able to arrest them with the goats. They are detained at Kakira CPS,” ASP Mubi said.
However, Mubi says preliminary finding shows that the suspects were trying to sell off the stolen goats to offer Christmas to their in-laws. He adds that they traced them down using police-installed highway cameras.
“Our cameras helped us to foil this theft. These suspects according to our preliminary investigations show that they wanted to sell these stolen goats for Christmas for their in-laws but we managed to stop their plans through swift security response,” Mubi added.
Mubi has assured people in Kiira region of total security against livestock theft citing that they have strengthened their patrol and intelligence to apprehend criminals travelling in vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and on foot. He says criminals always use motorcycles to fulfil their plans.
“We have integrated highway patrol cars to arrest criminals travelling on various roads like Jinja-Iganga and Jinja-Kamuli Road.”
Meanwhile, ASP James Mubi told this publication that they have arrested some people with fake driving permits and impounded at least seven buses for lacking road requirements.
“We have arrested a number of people driving with fake driving permits. Some people are on roads with driving permits in the names of other people which is unlawful,” says Mubi.
