UPDF Officer, security guard killed in Katwe bar fight

Owoyesigyire says after shooting Mubangizi dead, Otim was consequently attacked and beaten to death by the angry mob at the scene.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Territorial Police in Katwe are investigating a double murder incident after a security guard shot and killed a UPDF officer before he was later killed by the angry mob.

Katwe Police identified the deceased UPDF officer as Moses Mubangizi and the security guard as Huron Otim.

The incident according to Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire happened on Saturday, February 04 at around 11 pm when Otim picked a fight with UPDF officers at a bar and went back to retrieve his gun

Mubangizi is said to have overpowered Otim and disarmed him, giving the gun to another security guard, Wana Simon but in the aftermath, Otim then attacked Wana, took the gun back, and returned to the bar, where he shot and killed Mubangizi.

“Mubangizi fought with Otim and disarmed him, giving the gun to another security guard, Wana Simon. Otim then attacked Wana, took the gun back and returned to the bar where he shot and killed Mubangizi,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire says after shooting the officer dead, Otim was consequently attacked and beaten to death by the angry mob at the scene.

According to the police, they responded to the scene and recovered one gun and one bullet, but the magazine was missing.

“The bodies were taken to KCCA city mortuary for postmortem, and Wana has been arrested and is being held at Katwe police division for further investigations,” Owoyesigyire added, before urging the public to always inform the police promptly of any incidents involving private security guards.
