An American man lost over $850,000 (Shs3.1 billion) after he was tricked by an investment scammer posing as one of the top real estate moguls.
“In total with line of credit I lost $880,000,” said the investor whose names have been concealed for security purposes.
He said ever since he suffered a stroke he rarely leaves his home and spends a lot of time on the internet.
In January of this year, he was searching online for investment opportunities when he bumped into a site stating there are cheap houses for sale in Kampala.
He said he entered his email, phone number, and other information into the website and almost immediately he started getting calls from ‘all over the world.’
“After all the online conversation and phone calls, we made an appointment for a physical meeting to share the photos and all the plans. Ugandans are very wise people! We even visited some of the said houses and we sealed all the deals,” he narrated.
“After the payments, that’s when issues started! I just can’t imagine what I went through in a foreign land. These guys blocked all my calls and even the IDs I have for them are very fake, even the lines are no longer going through, I believe those numbers are in some lake or bush now!”
“To cut it short, I lost a lot of money, but as an internet person, I took another risk since I was on the computer almost all my time at home. I came across stories of how people are making a lot of money from fixed games and I thought this would be the only way to recover. I took another risk by contacting these guys who assured me that these are real games. I said fine! They charged me 1000$ instead of 250$ since am not Ugandan, I had no problem with it, I only wanted something real! I subscribed through their website, sent them my details, and was told to wait for a week since they had just gotten done with their game. After a week, I was contacted with the game and details. I didn’t trust it, so I staked 5,000$ on odd 9 with Bet365, and the receipt won! After two days again, I received and with the trust now, I had to stake 30,000$ on odd 32 and that’s how I recovered my money and stopped chasing for what I would never get.”
