Police mount search for 100 cult members missing in Serere

According to East Kyoga police, many of the missing Christ Disciples Church (CDC) sect members hail from Obululun Village in Bugondo Sub-County, Kidetok Town Council and Olwa village in Pingire Town Council.

SERERE, UGANDA: Police in East Kyoga is on a hunt for at least 100 members of a religious cult including the acting Serere District Commercial Officer Simon Peter Opolot and his wife who reportedly went missing last month.

A sect of the missing group according to East Kyoga police spokesperson Oscar Ageca are members of Christ Disciples Church (CDC) in Obululun Village, Bugondo Sub County, while others are from the areas of Kidetok Town Council and Olwa Village in Pingire Town Council- all in Serere District.

Preliminary findings indicate that the leadership of the church allegedly convinced their members that God had a plan for them to go and spread the gospel in Ethiopia, an idea many seem to have accepted- and subsequently vanished.

According to police, each missing member was asked to contribute Shs2 million for processing papers and to provide a bag of flour before they vanished.

“Followers consequently sold off their property such as cattle, land and other household items to raise the money. Those who met the requirements were allegedly moved by the church leadership to Ethiopia.”

Ageca who was addressing journalists on Thursday afternoon said police are also particularly hunting for the sect leaders identified as Rev James Enyaku and Augustine Orago to help in the investigations.

“Police are working to locate the leadership of the church and to ascertain the exact whereabouts of the missing members,” Ageca said.

At the time of filing this story, police still had what it described as little information on the matter and a general inquiry file was opened for the public to volunteer any information that could help in search efforts.
