Justice Kenneth Kakuru is dead, Judiciary confirms

The Judiciary spokesperson Jamson Karemani confirmed Tuesday morning that Justice Kakuru had succumbed to stage four prostate cancer at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he had been admitted with the illness.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Kenneth Kakuru is dead, the Judiciary spokesperson Jamson Karemani confirmed Tuesday morning.

Kakuru,75, succumbed to stage four prostate cancer at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, according to a close family member.

The late will greatly be remembered for being a no-nonsense judge in delivering court rulings, an instance being in 2018 when gave a dissenting judgment nullifying the removal of age limits from the Constitution.

With his deteriorating health condition, Justice Kakuru in 2021 applied to retire and asked the Judicial Service Commission chairperson, Justice Benjamin Kabiito, to forward his request for retirement to President Museveni.

In his letter, Kakuru explained that he had been advised that the management and treatment of his condition would go on for the rest of his life.

“I find myself unable to continue performing my function as a Justice of the Court of Appeal … I have taken the decision in the interest of the Judiciary, my health and my family,” he said in the letter.

Background

Born in 1958, Kakuru Kenneth attended local schools for his primary and secondary school education. 

He studied law at Makerere University, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. Later, he graduated with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree, also from Makerere University. 

His Diploma in Legal Practice was obtained from the Law Development Centre, in Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. He also holds a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Educational Policy Planning and Development, awarded by Kyambogo University.

He was the founder and Senior Partner of the law firm of Kakuru & Company Advocates, a Kampala-based law firm, established in 1987.

Kakuru established a reputation as an environmental rights attorney and an expert in public interest litigation.

He was an associate professor at the Uganda Pentecostal University, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, and also an external examiner at the Law Development Center.

He founded and still served as a non-executive director of Greenwatch Uganda, an environmental advocacy non-profit.

Kenneth Kakuru was married to the late Winnie Ikiriza Kakuru until her death in 2009. On 14 January 2012, he married Charity Nankunda Kakuru, his current wife.
