Jinja school teacher, partner remanded for a week over lesbianism

The duo appeared before the Jinja Grade One Magistrate, Mr Yafesi Ochieng on Wednesday where they were read charges of gross indecency and luring another person by threats or intimidation to do an unlawful sexual act.

JINJA, UGANDA: The Grade one Magistrate Court in Jinja City has sent on remand Ms Lydia Mukoda, the Deputy Headteacher of PMM Girls School and her alleged partner, Ms Martha Naigaga to spend one week at Kirinya prison over alleged involvement in lesbianism.

The duo appeared before Magistrate Mr Yafesi Ochieng on Wednesday and were read charges of gross indecency (a crime used to criminalise sexual activity between men or women that fell short of sodomy, which required penetration) and procurement of gross indecency (procure another person by threats or intimidation to do an unlawful sexual act).

The Magistrate ordered Mukoda and her partner to reappear in court next week on March 14 as proceedings in the charges mentioned begin.

The deputy headteacher was arrested last week on Friday after angry parents stormed the school, accusing her of promoting lesbianism among students.

Before her arrest, her alleged partner, Ms Naigaga, who is 30 years old,  and a timber dealer in Walukuba in Jinja reportedly accused Mukoda of neglecting her by not providing her with basic needs as well as cheating on her.

While addressing the media on Monday, the police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga confirmed Mukoda’s arrest and said police were trying to gather witness statements and documentary evidence that can help them pin the accused on several cases, including trafficking in persons and unnatural sexual practices.

“The only person we got is a lady who was staying with this deputy head teacher as husband and wife, although they are both females. We got sex toys, and condoms in their home and inquiries are continuing,” Mr Enanga said.
