Man kills self after losing sh7m to prostitute

The deceased identified as Herbert Namugera allegedly used a bedsheet which he tied on the pole inside the bathroom roof to commit suicide

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala are investigating circumstances under which a man committed suicide by hanging after losing shs7 million to a prostitute he had hired for fun in the night.

The deceased is Herbert Mugera, 32, while the lady suspect currently on the run is one Brenda, an adult entertainer.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the incident happened at Channel 3 Lodge in Wakimese zone, Kyengera Town Council Wakiso District where the deceased had rented a room to have fun with Brenda on Friday evening.

Onyango said Herbert who had left Ssembabule District to process his travel documents in preparation for employment abroad got in touch with the prostitute only identified as Brenda, and the two agreed to meet and have fun in the lodge before the lady stole all his money amounting to Shs 7 million.

“The deceased upon realizing that his money had been stole called his best friend Lwiga Mohamad who escorted him to report the theft case to Kyengera police station vide SD REF 21/10/03/2023,” Onyango said.

He said police looked for Brenda the entire day within the area but failed to trace her after being told she had shifted.

“On the 11th/03/2023 at around 0930hrs, the lodge attendants knocked on the door where Namugera was but there was no response. When they peeped from the bathroom window, they saw him hanging in the bathroom. He had committed suicide and they reported the matter to police.”

“The deceased Namugera used a bedsheet which he tied on the pole inside the bathroom roof to commit suicide,” he added.

The body of the deceased was Saturday afternoon taken to Mulago city mortuary for postmortem as police investigate the case further.
