UNCST (The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology) has accredited Kabale University Research Ethics Committee-KAB-REC to carry out an ethical review of research protocols.
The main purpose of the KAB-REC is to review the science and ethics of both national and international proposals/protocols submitted to the Committee, while safeguarding the rights, safety and welfare of the research participants involved.
In a press statement dated 13th March 2023 and signed by the Kabale University Vice-chancellor Prof Joy Constance Kwesiga, the University has been granted the certificate of accreditation after a vigorous assessment process and for training the committee members and several University staff in preparation for takeoff.
The accreditation is a requirement for every University to acquire from the council to carry out professional and reputable research.
Speaking to this publication in a phone interview, the University secretary Canon Johnson Baryantuma Munono said that “the University will now start to administer and conduct research in all fields by both students and non-students in all academic fields.”
He added that the University has been struggling to carry out research from Mbarara University of Science and Technology adding that it was tiresome and costly to the University and the students.
The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology-UNCST was established in 1990 for the purpose of advising on and coordinating the formulation of national policy on all fields of science and technology, and for assisting in the promotion and development of indigenous science and technology.
