LUWEERO, UGANDA: Fairventures Worldwide, a non-profit environmental organization based in Stuttgart, Germany has partnered with Ndejje University to commemorate the International Day of Forests with the goal of restoring the 5-acre land in Kiyanda-Ndejje, Luweero district
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, the International Day of Forests celebrates and creates awareness about the importance of all types of trees and forests. The theme for 2023 is “Forests and health”.
The tree planting event will take place on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Kiyanda in Luweero with Mr Tom Obong Okello, the Executive Director of the National Forestry Authority (NFA) as the chief guest at the function.
According to a joint press release by Fairventures Worldwide and Ndejje University, it is anticipated that over 2000 indigenous tree seedlings including Cordia milleni, Albizia Coriaria, Terminalia, Maesopsis eminii, and Grevilla robusta will be planted in designated areas to ensure species diversion.
Representatives from Ndejje University and Fairventures Worldwide set out to educate the local community about the health benefits, values, and roles of trees, among other activities of the day.
About Fairventures Worldwide
Fairventures Worldwide (FVW) is an international NGO that combines sustainable reforestation using fast-growing indigenous tree species in agroforestry systems, food production and value chain development, ensuring income generation for smallholder farmers and regeneration of degraded landscapes.
Currently, Fairventures is undertaking restoration projects with both private and public entities such as Makerere University, the National Scouts Association, Bethany Land Institute, and the Fort Portal Tourism City Council.
Previously, FVW organised massive community tree planting events at the Kaazi Scouts Forest Reserve in Busabala and Fort Portal Tourism City as part of the Re-Greening Fort Portal campaign and restored another degraded landscape in Bunyama-Mukono, with both community members and students from learning institutions serving as key planters.
Ndejje University‘s Faculty of Environment and Agricultural Sciences (FEAS) was established in response to the growing need for trained Environment, Agriculture, and Natural resource managers to provide solutions to the challenges of environmental degradation and sustainable development.
The vision of this faculty is to become a centre of excellence in teaching, research and community outreach in the field of sustainable agriculture, forestry, environment and natural resources. With such partnerships, the faculty will be able to achieve its mission of producing all round natural resource stewardship that is effectively, efficiently and profitably managed, based on sustainability.
Through the faculty, Ndejje University seeks to address the escalating degradation and contribute to the conservation of the environment and natural resource base and ecosystem services.
The collaboration between Fairventures Worldwide and Ndejje University is seen as an essential step towards developing and strengthening synergies in climate mitigation, forests, and tree management, particularly as an institution participating in forest and climate change-related activities.
