IBANDA: S.4 student drowns in river during Geography tour

The deceased identified as 19-year-old Caroline Natamba, was an S.4 finalist at St. Veronica Secondary School in Rushango Town Council, Ibanda district.

IBANDA, UGANDA: Police in Ibanda District, Western Uganda is investigating how a senior four student drowned dead in Rushango River during a Geography study trip.

The deceased identified as 19-year-old Caroline Natamba, was an S.4 finalist at St. Veronica Secondary School in Rushango Town Council, Ibanda district.

Rwizi Regional Police Spokesman Samson Kasasira confirmed the report and said the incident happened on Friday, March 31st when Natamba and other candidates had gone for a school geography field study at Rushango river under the guidance of their teacher Turinawe Tom.

According to Kasasira, “It is alleged that while at the River, some of the students including the deceased entered waters of river Rushango and started swimming and during the process, the deceased failed to support herself and drowned.”

Police retrieved the deceased’s body and ferried it to Ruhoko Health Center IV for postmortem examination and instituted investigations.

SP Kasasira said that relevant statements have been recorded and inquiries into the matter are still ongoing to guide appropriate action to be taken.

Similar incidents

In April 2022, a senior two student of Buhumba Foundation College drowned in Lake Bunyonyi after the canoe she was travelling in capsized due to strong winds.

In 2021, another student at Bishop Barham University in Kabale District drowned and died in Lake Bunyonyi as she attempted to swim. The late had crossed Lake Bunyonyi to visit her maternal grandmother that lives in Kagasha village, Kitoma parish in Rubaya Sub County.
