KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Bishop Emeritus of Hoima Catholic Diocese, Rev. Albert Edward Baharagate Akiiki is dead. He was 93 years old.
Bishop Baharagate passed away at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala where he had been admitted with an illness according to an announcement by the catholic church.
“Dear people of God, the Bishop of Hoima Catholic Diocese, The Rt Rev Vincent Kirabo with deep sorrow announces the death of the Bishop Emeritus of Hoima Catholic Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Albert Edward Baharagate Akiiki,” the diocese said in a statement released by Fr Dominic Ndugwa, Chancellor Hoima on Thursday morning.
The Prime Minister of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Mr Andrew Byakutaga mourned the late Bishop as a pillar of unit and hard work, and a key figure the region of Bunyoro has lost.
“He was passionate about faith, culture hard work, unity, peace and improvement of the welfare of the people,” Byakutaga said.
Mr Brian Kaboyo, the Mayor of Hoima City said the Bishop will be remembered for his contribution towards the development of the Church, community and sports talents of the youth.
“He has left a big legacy and he has touched the lives of so many people. We shall miss him dearly,” Kaboyo said.

Bishop Albert Edward Baharagate was born on 25th February 1930 in Nyamigisa Village, in present-day Masindi District, in Bunyoro sub-region, in the Western Region of Uganda.
He was ordained a Priest on 7th December 1958 and appointed as Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Hoima on 7th July 1969 and he resigned on 9th March 1991.
Baharagate was one of the 12 bishops who were consecrated on August 1, 1969 by Pope Paul VI during a colourful ceremony at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
On 9th March 1991, he resigned as Bishop of Hoima and as of July 2019 and lived a quite life after serving in various capacities including being the National Chairman of the Uganda Red Cross Society.
