LWENGO, UGANDA: Nine people all belonging to the same family died on the spot and two others sustained injuries in a tragic road crash that happened at at Kyooko, Kinoni Trading Centre in Lwengo district on Friday evening.
The nasty collision occurred at around 4 pm along the Masaka-Kampala highway when a Toyota Alphard vehicle carrying the family members headed to Mbarara went head to head with a trailer coming from Mbarara to Kampala.
Pictures from the ugly scene shared social media on Friday evening showing the lifeless bodies of victims in a pool of blood at the accident spot.
A Red Cross official was seen in one of the pictures using an axe to extract human flesh stuck in the mangled shell of the Alphard, with glass and metal strewn all over the ugly scene.
Firefighters and rescue services rushed to the blood-soaked scene to extract victims of the accident who were fighting for their life.
Citing eyewitness accounts, traffic police Friday evening attributed the fatal road crash to “speeding and driving in a wrong road lane.”
Same Dark Spot
According to SP Richard Komakech the Greater Masaka regional traffic officer, the venue for Friday’s road crash is a renowned blackspot where about ten people perished in a deadly accident late December 2022.
“This place has been our black spot where have registered many accidents and we have made many reports. It is a slope and a long curve of almost 300 metres towards the swamp. So, there’s an element of speed in this area,” SP Komakech remarked.
The number of crashes and crash fatalities on Ugandan roads remains unacceptably high, with an estimated 12,589 and 4,159 respectively as reported in the Annual Traffic and Crime Report by the Uganda Police Force (UPF) in 2021.
