MAKERERE: Suspended student attempts to commit suicide, hospitalized

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Isaac Byaruhanga a Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery student at Makerere University has been hospitalized after attempting to commit suicide to end his own life.

Isaac was among the three individuals including another student identified as Mugaga Arnold (Bachelor of Arts Drama & Film) and Mr Dhubanji Xavier (Custodian Mitchell Hall) suspended by Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe over the occurrence of an electoral debate (kimeza) at Mitchell Hall.

In his suspension letter, Nawangwe stated that he received a report from the Mitchell Hall administration and the Chief Security Officer that the suspended students participated in an unauthorized Electoral debate (kimeza) in Mitchell Hall between the hours of 8 pm and 9 pm on the evening of 5th April 2023.

The VC pinned the duo to have particularly started the fight that resulted in the severe injury of one of the University students, a one Sserunjogi Robert who is, as a result, currently hospitalised at Makerere University Hospital.

Upon being suspended from the University, Isaac reportedly attempted to end his own life by taking poison as he felt he was wrongly accused to get the suspension.

However, he was immediately evacuated by friends and relatives after noticing he had taken a poisonous substance and he is currently hospitalized at the University Hospital.

This publication could not gather more details at the time of writing but friends close to the victim promised to provide more details on the progress of Isaac’s health which has been described as a worrying one though being monitored.
