KABALE, UGANDA: Five students of Kabale technical institute including the Guild president Miracle Tayebwa have been suspended for alleged involvement in inciting violence among the students.
The decision to suspend the students was reached during the disciplinary committee meeting that was held on 8th of April, 2023 and chaired by the committee chairperson Hillary Mbangirwoha.
In a letter dated 12, April 2023 and signed by Mbangirwoha, five students including Miracle Tayebwa, Miracle Ainembabazi, Ivan Akanyebembera, Allan Ainebyoona and Amos Ampumurize were suspended on allegations of continuously inciting violence among the students that has on several occasions geared strikes and demonstrations at the institution.
According to the letter, the five suspended students have been asked to report back to the institution in July and August respectively with their parents to sit for their final exams.
The institute’s deputy principal Dominic Mubangizi confirmed the suspension of the students saying that the board will again sit next week to suggest the appropriate punishment.
However, Tayebwa, one of the suspended students described the decision as unfair and uncalled for adding that they intend to move to the office of the District Resident Commissioner to seek his intervention to engage the institute administration to rescind their decision.
On 3rd of this month, the management of the institution decided to suspend all the students for a period of two weeks after students staged a demonstration, demanding the transfer of the institution’s Principal, Francis Tibemanya for alleged maladministration.
The students led by the guild president Miracle Tayebwa accuse the Kabale Technical Institute Principle Francis Tibemanya and his administration of increasing tuition without notice, for increasing Information Technology (IT) fees from Shillings to 20,000 to 100,000.
They also accuse him of compelling students with retakes in some papers to pay Shillings 530,000 for the whole term instead of Shillings 8,000 per paper as it used to be in the past.
They also said that despite being required to pay Shillings 150,000 for tools, the administration has decided not to give them to students to do practical lessons.
