Bayern Munich suspend Sadio Mane after burst-up with Leroy Sane

Sane and Mane were seen on the pitch arguing in the latter stages of the match on Tuesday night, where City beat the German champions 3-0 at Etihad Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Sadio Mane, 31, will not be in the FC Bayern squad for the home game against 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday.

MUNICH, GERMANY: Bayern Munich suspended Senegalese forward Sadio Mane following his altercation with teammate Leroy Sane in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Manchester City on Tuesday.

Bayern in a Thursday statement said the 31-year-old former Liverpool forward faces a fine and would not be in the squad for Saturday’s home match against Hoffenheim.

“Sadio Mane, 31, will not be in the FC Bayern squad for the home game against 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday. The reason is Mane’s misconduct after FC Bayern’s Champions League game at Manchester City. In addition, Mane will receive a fine,” a statement from Bayern read.

Bayern Munich officials held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss possible punishments for Mane and, according to Sky Germany, among the sanctions considered were a fine, suspension, and even a parting of the ways in the summer.

The pair clashed on and off the field during Bayern’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, with Mane reported to have punched Sane in the face after the game. It was expected that Mane would apologise in front of the team during Thursday’s training session.

Bayern, managed by Thomas Tuchel, suffered their biggest Champions League defeat since a 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

The German club will now hope for a quick and decisive action to put the matter to bed.

The Senegal international, who Bayern acquired for £35m after a glittering spell at Anfield, has missed a chunk of this season, including the World Cup, because of injury and has scored 11 goals in 32 Bayern appearances.
