MBALE, UGANDA: Retired High Court Judge Wilson Masalu Musene is dead. He was 67.
According to an official announcement by the Judiciary, Musene died at Mbale Hospital in Mbale City on Sunday evening.
“This is to announce the death of retired Judge of the High Court Wilson Masalu Musene that occurred this evening in Mbale. Funeral arrangements to be announced later. May He Rest in Eternal Peace,” a statement issued by the Judiciary read on Sunday evening.
Musene retired from active service in 2021 after clocking the mandatory retirement age of 65. But his retirement was marred with controversy when he was sent on forced leave by principal judge Dr Flavian Zeija three months before the official retirement date.
The three months are usually provided for by the constitution to allow the judge time to clear pending chamber work
The late was in August 2020 sanctioned by the United States Government in August 2020 with financial sanctions and visa restrictions over the alleged involvement in activities that victimised young children in a corrupt adoption scheme.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in its 2020 statement noted that Judge Musene, and three others participated in a scam that saw young children removed from their families in Uganda and placed into a corrupt adoption network, aided by the facilitation of officials.
Musene becomes the second high-profile member of the judiciary family to pass on this year following the death of Constitutional court justice Kenneth Kakuru who was still a serving judge.
