One dead, scores injured after truck overturns in Nakasongola

The injured who survived with fractured ribs, legs, and arms were rushed to St Franciscan health centre IV, Kakooge health centre II, Nakasongola health centre III, and Luwero Hospital.

NAKASONGOLA, UGANDA: At least one person died on the spot and several others were critically injured in a Tuesday afternoon accident in Nakasongola district.

The accident occurred at Kinoni village, in Kakooge town council, when a truck, reg. no. UAR 703X carrying over 70 casual labourers from a sugarcane plantation developed mechanical problems in Kinoni, veered off the road and overturned several times.

The deceased was not yet identified by press time while others survived with fractured ribs, legs, and arms and were rushed to St Franciscan health centre IV, Kakooge health centre II, Nakasongola health centre III, and Luwero Hospital.

Fred Lubinga, the Katuugo town council LC III chairperson says that the police in the area have several times refused to impound trucks loaded with casual workers.

The 2021 Uganda Police Annual Crime Report says there was a 42 per cent increase in the number of crashes from 12,249 in 2020 to 17,443 in 2021. More than 3,000 crashes were fatal, and 4,616 survived with minor injuries.

The report says on average, Uganda loses approximately 10 people per day due to road crashes.
