KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police on Wednesday evening responded to put out a fire outbreak that gutted the Ntinda police barracks in Nakawa Division, Kampala, the country’s capital.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire the fire which started at around 9:45 pm on Wednesday night was quickly put off by the fire brigade that responded swiftly to the incident.
“There was a fire outbreak today 19 April at about 9:45 PM at Ntinda Police Station traffic office and Barracks. The fire prevention and rescue service managed to put out the fire,” Owoyesigyire said in a police statement.
Preliminary findings revealed that the Wednesday night fire started from the barracks as a result of negligence and spread to the nearest traffic office.
“It is alleged that two children set a fire inside the barracks that came in contact with electric cables,” the deputy KMP spox said.
“No injuries or fatalities have been registered, although the full extent of the damage had not yet been fully ascertained,” he added.
“We would like to thank the fire prevention and rescue services for their prompt response and commend them for their bravery in putting out the fire.”
According to police statistics released earlier this year, at least 1,258 fire incidents were reported in 2022 compared to 1,058 that were registered in 2021.
This means fire incidents increased by 16 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021.
