KIBUKU, UGANDA: Two people are currently nursing injuries sustained from gunshots after the Police fired warning shots to intercept three suspected thieves in Kibuku district.

The accused are Francis Osilon, 25, a driver who lives in the Katuki cell neighbourhood of Pallisa Town Council, Vincent Ochola, 23, a taxi operator who lives in the Omatakojo Kibale neighbourhood of Pallisa Town Council, and Bilitio Gidongo, 27, who lives in the industrial region of Pallisa Town Council.

ASP Immaculate Alaso, the Police spokesperson for the Bukedi North zone confirmed the incident and said that the suspects were shot at on Friday, April 21, after police stopped them while travelling in a vehicle and they attempted to flee.

Preliminary information indicates that at around 10:00 pm on Friday, Budaka Central Police Station officers on routine patrol discovered an Isuzu Elf truck registration number UBD 823Q at Namengo-Butaleja road at a dark intersection.

“The Police officers stopped the vehicle but the driver continued driving towards the Budaka-Iganga highway heading to Kibuku district. Our officers became suspicious about the activities of the vehicle, followed up and shot warning bullets in the air while at Nasanga to scare the driver to stop, but in vain. Upon branching off to Kibuku district at Budaka town, the officers still shot in the air but the driver declined to stop,” Alaso noted.

She stressed that the Police intercepted the vehicle in Kanyolo-Iganga village, Kibuku parish, Kibuku sub-county, at about 11:00 pm where the driver of the suspected robbers found a crowd of people along the road celebrating Eid.

However, she noted that in the process of firing warning shots, two of the occupants were injured in the legs.

Alaso noted that several exhibits including the Isuzu truck, a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UFH 433E, and 63 cartons of wheat flour were recovered.

She noted that inquiries into the incident are being conducted in order to determine where the items that the suspects were unable to account for, were stolen from.

The suspects are being held on suspicion of possessing stolen property
