One dead, scores injured as Kampala-bound taxi overturns in Mityana

MITYANA, UGANDA: At least one person died on the spot and ten others survived serious injuries after a an ill-fated commuter taxi overturned along Kampala –Mityana highway on Monday evening.

The fatal accident happened at around 8 pm crash at Kikumbi Village, two kilometres outside Mityana Town when a Taxi motor vehicle of Registration Number UBH 141W coming from Fort Portal heading to Kampala suffered a tyre burst and overturned several times.

Fred Makanga, an eyewitness at the time of the incident told this reporter that the driver of the commuter taxi was driving at a high speed and lost control after one of the rear tyre burst.

“The taxi driver was speeding and when one of the back tyres burst, he failed to control the vehicle forcing it to roll several times,” Makanga said without revealing the exact number of fatalities so far at the accident scene.

At the time of filing the report, only one person had been confirmed dead while the ten injured occupants of the ill-fated taxi were conveyed to Mityana General Hospital for further management.

Traffic police were yet to issue a statement on the accident by press time.
