Suspect commits suicide in Iganga Police cells

This comes just few days after another suspect mysteriously died in Mayuge police cells early this week. Mayuge district shares boundaries with Iganga district and they all fall under Busoga East policing region.

IGANGA, UGANDA: Police in Iganga are investigating the suicide by hanging in which a 25-year-old man decided to end his life in the toilet of Iganga central police cells.

The incident reportedly happened on Thursday night after the deceased identified as Gadabada Ali was arrested on charges of possessing suspected stolen property on Wednesday at 2pm before spending a night in police custody.

Busoga East police spokesperson SP Diana Nandawula has confirmed this incident saying that the deceased was found selling suspected stolen spare parts of motorcycles and he was arrested by boda boda cyclists before handing him over to Iganga CPS.

“He was selling spare parts of motorcycles and the boda boda cyclists became suspicious after finding him without a number plate on his motorcycle. They arrested him and presented him to their chairperson before bringing him to Iganga CPS,” SP Nandawula said before adding that they had charged him with possession of suspected stolen property. 

Police says that the deceased used his pair of trousers to hang himself in the toilet of the cells.

“It was at around 10:00pm on Thursday when he went to the toilet and his colleagues thought he was going to ease himself just to be found hanging dead by one of them who had gone to use the toilet,” Ms Nandawula said.

This comes just few days after another suspect mysteriously died in Mayuge police cells early this week. Mayuge district shares boundaries with Iganga district and they all fall under Busoga East policing region.

The deceased identified as Ntende Benard, 18 alias Dan, a resident of Magunga village, Imanyiro sub county in Mayuge district was reportedly arrested on April 22, Saturday last week before detaining him in cells of Mayuge central police station where he mysteriously died on Tuesday.

According to SP Nandawula, Ntende boycotted eating something which could be one of the causes of his death.
