KASESE, UGANDA: At least 200 people have been left homeless after multiple landslides destroyed 26 homes in Kasese district, Western Uganda over the weekend.

According to the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), the heavy rains triggered landslides that swept away homes, leaving the households at risk.

“40 households have camped at Kibirigha Roman Catholic Church while 200 households are at risk,” said URCS spokesperson Irene Nakasiita on Tuesday morning, adding, “26 households were destroyed completely.”

“There are gaps identified on shelter, protection issues, and wash needs,” she added.

Nakasiita said six villages in Kyarumba Subcounty, Kabonera Parish —Kibirigha I, Kibirigha II, Muthambi, Kiitabona, Buthali II, and Kasanzi were among those affected by landslides.

At Kibirigha Roman Catholic Church, both males and females use one latrine.

Other humanitarian needs include food, clean water, warm clothes for children, and blankets, among other basic necessities to support the displaced families.
