Kisoro mudslides claim six after heavy downpour

According to the Uganda Red Cross, five of the six confirmed fatalities were residents of Biizi village and another from Gihuyaga village, both in Chibumba parish Murora Sub County in Kisoro district, Western Uganda.

KISORO, UGANDA: At least six people have died, and another injured after mudslides hit them during a heavy downpour that ravaged Kisoro district oin the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

According to the Uganda Red Cross, five of the six confirmed fatalities were residents of Biizi village and another from Gihuyaga village, both in Chibumba parish Murora Sub County in Kisoro district, Western Uganda.

Mr Gaudiozi Ntibarikure, the LCI chairman for Bizi village who lost three biological children in the mudslides said the heavy rain destroyed gardens besides claiming other lives in the area.

The biological children of Mr Ntibarikure who died on the spot in the mudslides have been identified as Gladiz Uwamariya 20, Glidas Mucunguzi a P.5 pupil, and Jason Tutizere P.7.

Mr Hadard Nkunzimana, the Murora sub-county LCIII told this website that at the same residence of Mr Ntibarikure, two other members lost their lives, whom he identified as Desire Tumuhimana (his grandson), and his shamba boy only identified as Junior, a son to Mr Philip Nzabanita of the neighbouring village of Bukerahe.

Another victim, a senior six candidate, Nelson Kazungu, a 21-year-old resident of the same village and the son of Charles Sebasore died on the spot after being hit by mudslides as he fled their residential home.

Mr Nkuzimana said Ms Hope Nyirabwenge, the wife of Mr Ntibarikure survived with injuries and is currently admitted to Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro District where she is receiving treatment.

The Subcounty chairperson also noted that a pygmy woman identified as Provia Nyiranzara that was trapped by the mudslides was rescued alive by residents after she made an alarm.

By press time, all the bodies of the deceased persons had been retrieved and burial arrangements are being made to be given a decent send-off.
