Soldier shoots woman dead, injures another in Kagadi

The deceased identified as Rebecca Masika was killed in an incident that occurred on Thursday evening at Kamina village in Kitebere parish, Ndaiga sub-county in Kagadi district.

KAGADI, UGANDA: Security in Kagadi district is investigating a case under which a woman was shot dead in a scuffle over the arrest of a suspect who was perceived by the residents as an innocent man in Kagadi District.

The deceased identified as Rebecca Masika was killed in an incident that occurred on Thursday evening at Kamina village in Kitebere parish, Ndaiga sub-county in Kagadi district.

Eyewitnesses said another man identified as Mr Ivan Tugume sustained a bullet wound after being shot during the same scuffle between security forces and the residents.

Mr Solomon Wamala, the chairperson for fishermen on Lake Albert said that he was informed in a phone call that security forces had gone to arrest Mr Darlington Nsamba who hails from Kigoya village in Buliisa town.

Capt Geoffrey Sunday, the Spokesperson for the Masindi Field Artillery Division (FAD) of the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) confirmed the incident of the soldier’s shooting and said it was during a joint operation when the woman was allegedly hit by a stray bullet.

“I cannot tell the name of the soldier or the policeman who shot since it was a joint operation. But I confirm that the incident happened. We have constituted an investigation team that will come out with details,” said Capt Sunday.

A resident of Kamina who preferred anonymity told our reporter that the arrest that resulted in the shootout relates to a land wrangle where a tycoon holding a land title is mooting an eviction plan for many residents.

The incident occurred as the country mourns the tragic assassination of the State Minister for Gender, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col (rtd) Charles Okello Engola, by his bodyguard on Tuesday morning.
