Three perish in Kyengera house fire

Onyango says the residents found the baby burnt into ashes, one Halima already burnt to death and Aisha burnt but was still alive. She was then rushed to Kirundu Hospital but died on arrival.

WAKISO, UGANDA: Police in Kampala Metropolitan is investigating the cause of a fire outbreak that left three people dead at Kinawa Cell, Kasenge Ward in Kyengera Town Council in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Halima Nankaja, 50, the landlady, her grandson, Ayubu,3, and Aisha Nambi a 13-year-old female juvenile.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, “It is alleged that the fire broke out from inside the double-roomed residential house occupied by the deceased as the trio was asleep until neighbours saw the fire and had to dig through the walls and cut the metallic doors to gain access.

Onyango says the residents found the baby burnt into ashes, one Halima already burnt to death and Aisha burnt but was still alive. She was then rushed to Kirundu Hospital but died on arrival.

“Police was notified and responded with fire trucks. The fire was extinguished by locals before arrival of the fire brigade that was hampered by lack of clear access/roads to the scene,” Onyango said.

He says there was total damage to household property, especially the double room occupied by the deceased.

“However, other five single rental rooms attached to the same house were saved from the fire as it didn’t spread to them,” he added

The KMP spox said the two dead bodies were retrieved from the fire and taken to the city mortuary for post-mortem and the third body is still at Kirudu Mortuary.
