KIGEZI, UGANDA: The four local government officials in Kigezi sub-region districts who were arrested on Tuesday by the police together with the state house anti-corruption unit have been released on Police bond.
The officers were arrested by the State House Anti-corruption Unit on Monday for alleged abuse of office, embezzlement of Government funds, causing financial loss to the Government, and failing to supervise some of the projects in their respective areas.
The four officials include the Rubanda District Engineer Denis Twesigomwe, the Rubanda District Water Engineer David Otika, and the Lyakarimira town council engineer in Kabale District Spencer Ngabirano and the Kanungu District senior Engineer Eric Sivaseya Mutumba.
The suspects were first picked up by the State House Anti-corruption Unit led by the Deputy Director of Anti-corruption attached to Internal Security Organization Fatuma Namukwaya from their respective areas and gathered at Kabale municipal council offices for interrogation before they were arrested and handed over to police at Kabale central police station.
The Kigezi Region police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate Thursday evening confirmed that the accused officials were released after each of the suspects produced substantial sureties on condition to report back to police on 06th June 2023.
Last week, the State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Ms Beatrice Akello Akori, together with officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit inspected several government projects in Kigezi and unearthed shoddy work in some of them.
The affected projects include; staff quarters at Ryakarimira Town Council in Kabale District, Mpungu Health Center III in Rubanda District, Bushura Gravity Flow Scheme in Rubanda District and other projects in Kanungu District.
