Speke Resort Munyonyo to host Uganda’s G77 South Summit 2024

The prestigious Speke Resort Munyonyo is already gearing up for the highly anticipated Group of 77 (G77) 3rd South Summit that is scheduled to take place at the resort from the 21st to the 23rd of January 2024.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The prestigious Speke Resort Munyonyo is already gearing up for the highly anticipated Group of 77 (G77) 3rd South Summit that is scheduled to take place at the resort from the 21st to the 23rd of January 2024.

The Summit that was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic will now take place next year under the theme, “Leaving no one behind.”

On Thursday 18th of May, 2023, Amb. Pedroso Cuesta Pedro Luis, the Chair of Group of 77, and his team concluded their four days fact-finding mission on Uganda’s readiness to host the summit and concluded that they were pleased with the arrangements so far being done on the ground.

“We are very pleased because we have seen the magnificent efforts taking place here to ensure the event’s success, and we are convinced it will be a success,” said Amb. Pedroso adding that preparation works including among others, the construction of a state of art conference center at Speke Resort have been done.

In his remarks, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs said that the summit will be of economic and social benefit to the country.
“This momentous occasion underscores Uganda’s commitment to promoting collective economic interests and fostering South-South cooperation for development,” he said.

The South Summit is the supreme decision-making body of the Group of 77. The First and the Second South Summit were held in Havana, Cuba, and in Doha, Qatar respectively.

In accordance with the principle of geographical rotation, Uganda was given a chance to host this summit. The Group of 77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which provides the means for the countries of the south to articulate and promote their collective economic interests.

The summit also aims at enhancing joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system, and promote South-South cooperation for development.
