WOBULENZI, UGANDA: At least three people died, and others seriously hurt in a Thursday nasty road crash at Busula trading centre in Wobulenzi along the Kampala-Gulu highway, the Territorial Traffic Police in Wobulenzi district has said.
The accident which occurred at 4:25 am involved three motor vehicles; a Mercedez Benz Trailer, Reg No KBN 607P/ZB 3158 belonging to Palm Oil Transporters Ltd; an Isuzu Elf vehicle Reg No. UBJ 673Y, and an Isuzu Forward Reg No. UBM 860S.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Twineamaziima Sam identified the deceased trio as one Paul a male adult; Elisa, a resident of Busaawa-Semuto road in Wakiso district; occupants of the Isuzu Forward, and one Richard, a resident of Namavuudu zone in Gayaza, the occupant of the Isuzu Elf.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the Mercedez Benz trailer that was coming from Kampala side in a convoy of about eight vehicles heading to Nakasongola barracks (all loaded with bags of Ammonium Nitrate), on reaching Busula trading centre near SUNAFRICA FUEL STATION found another parked trailer of the same company that had developed mechanical problem. These trailers in the convoy parked on the road covering the whole lane of the Kampala – Gulu highway. The last trailer no. KBN 607P/ZB 3158 started overtaking the parked trailers. In due course, it crashed with an oncoming charcoal truck UBJ 673Y. It lost control and knocked a stationary motor vehicle (UBM 860S) and pushed it up inside a nearby building,” ASP Twineamaziima said in a statement.
He said the two occupants in the Isuzu Forward died on the spot while the driver sustained serious injuries.
“One of the occupants in the charcoal truck sustained serious. He succumbed to injuries at Njonvu medical centre. The victim (driver of Isuzu forward) was also taken to Njonvu medical centre by good Samaritans,” he added.
