One dead, scores injured in car crash along Hoima-Fort Portal Highway

KIKUUBE, UGANDA: At least one has been confirmed dead while others sustained severe injuries in a fatal accident at Kasaato trading centre in Buhimba Sub-county, Kikuube District.

The incident occurred on Thursday night at around 10 pm at Kasaato trading centre along Hoima-Fort Portal Road after an overspeeding pick-up Reg No. UAG 860D knocked a Canter Lorry carrying mobile traders of Reg No. UBD 309S which had parked in the trading centre.

Peter Mwesigwa one of the mobile traders on board who escaped with injuries said that the pickup driver seemed to have been drunk since some bottles of alcohol were found in the car.

“We had parked at Kasaato trading centre, but the over speeding pick up knocked the lorry which we were on, and due to high speed the man who was sitted in pickup passenger’s seat died instantly and lorry overturned hence injuring several colleagues,” Mwesigwa said

“This pickup driver seems to have been drunk since we recovered some coffee spirit bottles in his car, but unfortunately after the accident, he took off,” he added.

Julius Allan Hakiiza the Albertine regional police spokesperson has confirmed the incident and added the body of the deceased was taken to Kikuube Health Center IV for a postmortem amid burial preparations while the injured persons were also rushed to Kikuube Health Center 1V to seek medical attention and the crashed cars were taken to Kikuube Central Police station.

Meanwhile, the police mouthpiece advised drivers to always obey traffic rules to curb the high rate of road accidents in the area and added that the hunt for pickup drivers is on to help in police investigations.

“According to the exhibits on the ground, the pick-up driver was drunk and is currently on the run, so a police manhunt has commenced and if arrested, he will be arraigned to court to answer the charges,” Hakiiza said.

The rate of accidents on the Hoima-Fort Portal Road has been rampant in the Kikuube District where at least 3 accidents have occurred in a period of only one week claiming the lives of at least 3 people living several injured.

On Thursday morning at around 7 am an overspeeding taxi crashed two juveniles to death at Mairirwe trading centre, and this came a week period after a Link bus registration number UBJ 725Z collided with a Sugar cane truck attached to Hoima Sugar on the same Hoima-Fort Portal Road.
