Former BoU secretary, George William Nyeko dies at 68

Nyeko, 68, who retired from Bank of Uganda in March 2015, died on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at International Hospital Kampala.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The former Bank of Uganda Secretary, Mr George William Nyeko has died after a long period of illness, family sources have announced.

Nyeko, 68, who retired from Bank of Uganda in March 2015, died on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at International Hospital Kampala.

Sam Otim, a son of Mr Nyeko, said his father died of Liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that develops in your fatty tissue. Mr Otim said his late father’s condition started in 2018 and has been on medical attention since then till the time of his demise on Saturday evening.

The current Secretary at Bank of Uganda, Ms Susan Wasagali Kanyemibwa who replaced Nyeko in the position said the late gave hope to the hopeless at the Central Bank.

“I stand here to give testimony that I am what I am today partly because of Mr Nyeko,” Ms Kanyemibwa said during a vigil at Nyeko’s home in Mutungo on Sunday evening.

“I worked under him as a direct report for six years as a director of Board Affairs. He supervised and mentored me and threw me in the deep end, saying ‘you will sail,” she added.

Nyeko had worked at the Bank of Uganda for about 32 years in various departments where he rose the ranks.

He is survived by his wife Jolly Nyeko and four children; Ken Olara, Sam Otim, Lois Aber Kwikiriza and Eunice Asiimwe Nyote.
