Former MP Munyagwa arrested, remanded over criminal trespass

Mr Munyagwa and his alleged accomplices are accused of trespass and causing damage and face two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The former Member of Parliament for Kawempe South Division, Hon Mubarak Munyagwa has been remanded to Luzira prison on charges of malicious damage to property and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Munyagwa, 44, together with Paddy Kabuye, Joweria Nakafero, Godfrey Buwembo, and Isa Sekitoleko were Tuesday morning arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and arraigned before Kajjansi Chief Magistrate, Doreen Karungi who remanded them until June 12 after they denied the charges.

A prosecution charge sheet seen by DailyExpress, alleges that the group and others still at large, between May 26 and June 3, 2023, at Mutungo cell in Wakiso District, willfully and unlawfully destroyed the cassava garden of one Janan Opio valued at Shs5 million.

Kabuye, 47, is the chairman LC1 Bugu Zone, Busabala ward, Masajja Division in Wakiso District.

Buwembo is a 22-year-old student and resident of Mirimu Zone, Ndejje Ward, Makindye Ssabagabo in Wakiso District while Sekitoleko is a 45-year-old casual labourer and resident of Makindye central zone, Makindye Sabagabo in Wakiso District.

The last accomplice, Nakafero, 41, is a resident of Masajja B Cell, Makindye Sabagabo, Wakiso District.

The former legislator, together with his accomplices were in detention at Kajjansi Police Station awaiting to appear before the Kajjansi magistrate’s court to face two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.
