SHEEMA, UGANDA: Christians from Sheema district have pledged not to continue subscribing to the West Ankole Diocese, over the delayed creation of their Central Ankole Diocese (CAD).

The resolution was proposed on Wednesday 14th June 2023 in a meeting held at St Emanuel Church Kabwohe Hill in Sheema municipality called and attended by Anglicans under the Central Ankole Diocese Chapter.

Presiding over the meeting, the Chairperson of the new Diocese Chapter Can. Kabigumira David said that the application for the diocese to be curved from West Ankole Diocese was made in 1994 but has never been followed to its logical conclusion.

Kabigumira added that they recently followed their applications to the provincial offices until they discovered that the current West Ankole Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev Johnson Twinomujuni has never presented any document concerning the creation of the Diocese to the Archbishop’s office.

“We were left in shock after we went to the provincial offices only to find that there is nothing like a document that has ever been presented before these offices including that of the Archbishop, among all the documents we have presented before Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni. Imagine” said Can. Kabigumira David.

Attending the meeting, Bernard Makaaru one of the chief mobilizers said that their contributions to West Ankole Diocese should rather be diverted to uplift their shrinking projects including Ankole Western University, which is on the verge of collapse following its vice-chancellor’s resignation recently for a yet unknown reason.

“The Bishop should be careful because over the years he has done nothing, he only deserves to be dragged to courts of law over negligence and stealing properties of our own Ankole Western University construction materials. Our contributions to Bweranyangi should rather be used to revamp our shrinking projects,” said Makaaru.

He and others including Mugisha Perez and Ampaire Annet said that it’s high time the cat be let out of the bag with immediate effect and pledged to widen the campaign of sensitizing the rest to join the Movement.

The current Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni had earlier insisted that the quest for the diocese should follow the right procedures through church structures up to the Provincial assembly where a decision is made after several processes.

West Ankole Diocese is one of the 37 Dioceses that currently constitute the Church of Uganda, composed of 5 districts of Bushenyi, Buhweju, Sheema, Rubirizi and Mitooma, with its headquarters being at St Peter’s Cathedral Bweranyangi with 25 Archdeaconries, 132 Parishes and 412 Sub Parish Churches.

West Ankole Diocese has had 4 Bishops since its curving from Ankole Diocese in 1996, one being Rt. Rev. Yoramu Bamunoba (1977 – 1997), Rt. Rev. William Magambo (1997 – 2005), Rt. Rev. Yona Katonene (2005 – 2016), Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni (May 2017 to date).
