Five police officers survive nasty road accident in Mbale

The injured officers have been identified as; Cpl Bigambo Victor, PC Mujuni Jonah, PC Ampaire Frank, Tumwesigye Kenneth and the driver Wabutambi Robert.

MBALE, UGANDA: Police in Elgon region have started investigations into the cause of an accident which involved a police vehicle with five police officers attached to Budaka Central Police Station in the Bukedi North policing region.

The injured officers have been identified as; Cpl Bigambo Victor, PC Mujuni Jonah, PC Ampaire Frank, Tumwesigye Kenneth and the driver Wabutambi Robert.

The accident which left the officers critically injured occurred at Doko along Budaka-Mbale road after a police vehicle registration number UP 7704 lost control and overturned several times on Monday morning according to police.

“The accident occurred at around 0320c on Monday at Doko when they were travelling on motor vehicle registration number UP 7704 Isuzu D-max blue in colour which was being driven by constable driver Wabutambi Robert. The five officers are attached to Budaka CPS in Bukedi North region,” said SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon regional police spokesperson in a police statement.

According to SP Taitika, preliminary findings indicate that the motor vehicle which was coming from Budaka side and heading to Mbale city allegedly lost control hence veering off the road before overturning and injuring the occupants.

“The police motor vehicle which was coming from Budaka side heading to Mbale allegedly lost control and went off the road. It overturned and injured its occupants,” Taitika said adding that the scene was visited by industrial division police led by its commander SP Pahani Denis.

The Regional Spokesperson added that the victims were ferried to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for medical management as the motor vehicle was parked at Mbale barracks park yard pending inspection by the Inspector Of Vehicles (I.O.V).

He said investigations are on to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. According to the Police Annual Crime & Traffic Report, an average of 12 people die in road crashes daily in Uganda.
