NTUNGAMO, UGANDA: Popular Ugandan Billionaire and renowned Businessman Apollo Nyegamehe alias Aponye has died in a fatal car accident.
Aponye’s car was involved in the nasty road crash on Thursday at around 9pm when a vehicle in which he was travelling UBF 300Z (Land Cruiser) rammed into a Stationary trailer UAZ 767D (FUSO) at a place called Itojo, in Ntungamo along the Mbarraa – Kabale Highway.
According to preliminary police investigations, it is reported that Aponye’s car was headed towards Kabale when the driver lost control and crashed into the FUSO truck that had encountered a mechanical problem and parked alongside the busy highway.
“Regrettably, Mr. Apollo Nyegamehe lost his life in the accident. His remains have been transferred to the mortuary at Itojo Hospital. The two injured individuals were swiftly transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for immediate medical attention,” said SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson.
Further reports indicated that Aponye was travelling to attend a burial ceremony in his home village, Kigo in Muhanga town council, Rukiga District when the Thursday fatal crash happened.
At the time of his tragic death, Nyegamehe was the NRM Chairperson for Rukiga District in southwestern Uganda after his election into the position in 2021.
Aponye owned a string of businesses under his Aponye Ltd Empire including the popular Aponye Complex in Kampala which houses his Mega Standard Supermarket, Aponye Mall Ntinda, among others.
He also dealt in manufacturing, grain supplies and manufacturing and was one of the major suppliers of COVID-19 relief maize flour and beans for which he became popular for the controversy surrounding how he was handpicked for the mega multi-billion.
He was also the current supplier of food related stuff to the office of the Prime Minister (OPM).
