KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Mr Faruk Kirunda has dismissed as fake reports that President Museveni has appointed Ms Josephine Okui Okwakol Ossiya as the next Bank of Uganda Governor.

Earlier on Thursday, several media outlets reported that Mr Museveni who is vested with the appointing powers of the Central bank Governor had nominated Mrs Ossiya to the position and that she had been fully vetted by the Parliament’s Appointment Committee awaiting final approval.

However, according to Mr. Kirunda, the President has not made a Governor appointment at BOU and when such a time comes, an official communication will be made through official channels.

“FAKE NEWS AGAIN!! People shouldn’t stop stressing over nothing, and being used by opportunists. When H.E the President makes any appointment, it’s communicated through official channels. Let’s be patient,” he tweeted on Thursday.

Kirunda further clarified that the President had instead appointed Ms. Okwakol as a member on the Bank of Uganda Board of Directors, for which Parliament vetted her on Thursday morning.

This not the first time social media is awash with fakeUgandans have been treated to such fake reports regarding the appointment of the new Bank Governor.

Earlier this month, Mr. Kirunda dispelled reports that still alleged that President Museveni had appointed Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba as the new Bank of Uganda Governor.

The Press Secretary in a tweet last weekend said the news of Prof. Nuwagaba’s appointment was fake and had to be treated with all the contempt it deserved.

“FAKE NEWS! It’s not true that Prof. Nuwagaba has been appointed BOU Governor. President Museveni knows his duty and when he makes such an appointment, it will be communicated officially,”Mr. Kirunda tweeted.

The position of Governor Bank of Uganda fell vacant in January 2022 following the death of long-serving Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile. and since then, the Deputy Governor, Dr Michael Atingi-Ego has been Acting Governor till date.
