Aponye’s funeral programme out, burial set for Wednesday

The family of late tycoon Apollo Nyegamehe, alias Aponye have announced that the fallen businessman and grain billionaire will be laid to rest on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The family of late tycoon Apollo Nyegamehe, alias Aponye have announced that the fallen businessman and grain billionaire will be laid to rest on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

According to the released funeral programme, Aponye’s burial will be at his ancestral home in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District, in southwestern Uganda.

Upon transportation of the late’s body to Kampala last evening, the programme further reveals that several vigils will be held today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) at Aponye’s residence in Lubowa, Kampala.

On Monday, July 10, a requiem mass will be held at Rubaga Cathedral as friends and business partners pay last respects to the late tycoon.

Another requiem mass will take place on Tuesday, July 11, at St. Luke Muhanga Catholic Church in Rukiga before burial the next day (Wednesday, July 12).

Aponye who was in his 60s was killed in a Thursday evening road crash that occurred at a place called Itojo in Ntungamo District along the Mbarara-Kabale highway.

A police report regarding the incident indicated that the crash happened at around 9:30 pm on Thursday when Aponye’s car rammed into a stationary trailer that had been packed at the roadside along the busy highway, killing the businessman on the spot.

DailyExpress has established that Mr Apollo Nyegamehe was driving to his home village, Kigo in Muhanga Town Council for the burial of a Prisons driver who died on Wednesday in another road accident in Mpigi District.

The businessman and self-made billionaire owned a string of businesses under his Aponye Ltd Empire including the popular Aponye Complex in Kampala which houses his Mega Standard Supermarket, Aponye Mall Ntinda, among others.

He was the current NRM Chairperson for Rukiga District and was one of the prominent political brokers in the country, although he was not actively involved in elective politics.
