Speeding truck crashes three dead in Oyam

OYAM, UGANDA: Three people died on the spot in a Saturday fatal accident after a Mercedes Benz Trailer crashed into a Boda Boda rider along the Lira-Kamdini road in Oyam district.

According to the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema the trio were crashed dead by the truck in the 1:40pm accident that occured in Loro town Council along the busy road.

“The Motor Vehicle Regiy Number KCQ 940L/ ZG2826 Mercedes Benz driven by unidentified person  heading towards Lira from Kamdini was involved in the fatal accident,” said Okema.

He identified the rider if the Bajaj Boxer as Aporo Denis, and the two passengers he was riding as; Ogwang Innocent and Christine Eduke.

According to SP Okema, preliminary reports indicated that the truck driver lost control of the motor vehicle and collided with an oncoming motorcycle Registration number UEZ 422W, a Bajaj Boxer killing the trio on the spot.

The regional police spokesperson added that the scene of crime was visited  by the traffic police officer, and “a sketch map was drawn while the dead bodies were conveyed to Anyeke HC IV pending postmortem  to be conducted.”

The motor vehicles involved in the crash were towed away and taken to Loro police station in Oyam for further inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV.)

“The driver is still at large, whereas police preliminary finding indicates that the cause of the accident was due to reckless driving by the driver of the trailer who left his lane and knocked the rider on the right side  of the road” said Okema Jimmy.

“It is such a very unfortunate incident, we send our condolences to the bereaved families, we pledge our commitment to doing everything possible to see that justice is realized as investigation is ongoing, he concluded.
