Kiryandongo Woman MP rules out re-election bid for fourth term

The Kiryandongo district Woman Member of Parliament, Hon Kahunde Helen has declared that she will not seek re-election in 2026 after serving her third term.

KIRYANDONGO, UGANDA: The Kiryandongo district Woman Member of Parliament, Hon Kahunde Helen has declared that she will not seek re-election in 2026 after serving her third term.

Hon Kahunde has served as Woman MP on the ruling NRM party ticket since 2011 when the district was curved out of Masindi district.

In her statement, the Woman MP thanked the electorate in Kiryandongo for voting her into office since the district was created but decided that she won’t stand for the next elections in 2026 to allow another leader to take charge.

Below is her verbatim statement

“Beloved people of Kiryandongo District, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Kahunde Helen Max, the Woman MP of the district. I would like to give a big thank you in a special way to all of you for choosing me as your MP for 3 terms. I feel honoured and grateful for the trust and support you have given me to date.

“However, ladies and gentlemen, today I have a special announcement I would like to make. After thinking carefully, I have decided that I will not run for re-election in the upcoming 2026 general election.”

“I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to my party the National Resistance Movement and the entire NRM structure in Kiryandongo District for nurturing me and giving me the opportunity to serve the country.”

“Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and I pledge to continue serving you even when I am not MP.”

Born in November 1982, Hellen Kahunde is a Ugandan educator and politician who serves as the Member of Parliament representing the Kiryandongo District Women’s Constituency in the 11th Parliament (2021 to 2026).

She also serves on the Parliamentary Committee on East African Community Affairs.

Before joining elective politics, she taught science at Kigumba Intensive Secondary School, in Kigumba, Kiryandongo District, from 2008 until 2008.
