KAYUNGA, UGANDA: The leadership of Bugonya Church of Uganda in Kayunga district has fined a 23-year-old man Shs 600,000 for having sex on a church altar.

The ungodly act was reported to local authorities after the Catholic man was caught red-handed making love to his Muslim lover in the unfinished church building last week.

In the aftermath of events, the leadership of Bugonya church and the village decided that the suspects would, as punishment, pay for the purchase and fitting of shutters on all windows of the unfinished house of God.

The Church Lay leader, Mr Aaron Komugisha revealed to this website that the shs 600,000 fine meant to cover the purchase of window shutters has to be paid by the man involved in the act. The church leader did not reveal whether the woman will be penalised or not.

Ms Esther Nakamate the assistant head of laity at the Kayonza-based church said although the windows had no shutters, the male suspect accessed the church through the window and therefore the church resolved to make him pay for ‘breaking into the building”.

“We have resolved as a church to fine him by paying for all the shutters because he broke into the church,” Ms Nakamate said.

However, the suspect’s father has pleaded with the church and local leaders saying the Shs600,000 penalty is beyond their means and the son can only afford to buy and fix one shutter.

Mr George William Kanda, the Bugonya Village chairperson where the church is located, said the suspect (who is yet to be apprehended) in addition to buying the window shutters, will have to repair church furniture damaged in a melee during the arrest of the lovers.

“The exhibits of a head gear and a T-shirt [recovered from the suspects] are still with us and we are insisting on the couple appearing in our LC court,” the Chairperson added.

The Village Defence Secretary Mr Joseph Kahinda said efforts are underway to have the man (suspect) arrested and that they have asked the father to produce him by all means.

“We have asked [him] to produce his son in the LC court so that we can hear his side of the story, but he says he doesn’t know his son’s whereabouts,” Mr Kahinda noted.

Christians at the church resumed prayers on Sunday Prayers after a session of spiritual cleansing and fasting to purify the house of God.
