RWAMPARA, UGANDA: Police in Rwampara district, western Uganda have arrested a woman who stole a church vehicle on Wednesday during the burial of prominent businessman Apollo Nyegamehe alias known as Aponye.
The vehicle, Suzuki type, Reg number UAT 478N was attached to Kikungiri Archdeaconry in Kabale Municipality’s Southern division, under the Kigezi Diocese.
According to a tweet by former Political Commissar in Uganda Police, AIGP (rtd) Asan Kasingye, the woman whose particulars were not available by press time was intercepted by traffic officers at a roadblock in Rwampara along the highway.
Steven Kamara, the Rwampara District Police Commander, in a brief statement said that the church vehicle that had been reported stolen was “intercepted at Kinoni Trading Center just as it was about to cross into Mbarara City.”
“The suspect and the car will be taken to Rukiga district, where the offense was committed,” he added without revealing the particulars of the woman suspect.
The Kigezi Diocese Secretary Rev Canon Milton Nkurunungi yesterday said that the vehicle was reported missing during a requiem service at the deceased’s home in Muhanga town council, Rukiga District.
“We were attending the burial [Aponye’s burial] and one of our archdeacon’s vehicles was stolen. We have reported to police and to the DPC and we have also informed those in Ntungamo and Mbarara. They are making all tracking to see that the vehicle is recovered,” Rev. Canon Nkurunungi told this website on Wednesday evening.
The clergy official condemned the act, wondering how someone could take advantage of a situation of grieving to commit such a crime.
Aponye who died in a road crash on Thursday last week at Itojo in Ntungamo district was by 4pm on Wednesday laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kitaburaza village, Muhanga town council, Rukiga district.
The road crash that claimed the life of Aponye is one of the many that have taken a toll on Uganda’s population in the recent past.
Three separate crashes occurred this week, including the grisly one that claimed the life of a Link bus driver in Kyenjojo district.
