KAMPALA, UGANDA: Uganda National Football team “The Cranes” have been pitted in Group G alongside Algeria and Guinea in the draws for qualifiers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The draws for the teams on the African continent were conducted on Thursday, July 13, during the 45th CAF Congress in Abidjan with Mozambique, Botswana, and Somalia, completing the four teams in the group to ensure fierce competition en route to the tournament that will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
In total, 54 African countries were drawn into nine groups, each consisting of six teams.
According to the format for the qualifications, the top team in each group will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the four best runners-up will participate in playoffs to determine the final team to advance to the inter-confederation playoffs.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will see an increase in the number of participating teams from 32 to 48, resulting in a rise in the number of African teams from 5 to 9 or 10, depending on the outcome of the intercontinental playoffs.
Uganda Cranes has the opportunity to showcase its talent on the global stage and secure its place among the continent’s representatives in the expanded tournament through their journey in Group G.
